TOPIC OF EXPLORATION:
The relation of the Sublime and the synthôme : Lyotard, Lacan , Zizek etc..



The topos where the 'echos' of some unsignifiable 'Thing' can be felt. Connection to Art . Zizek example = physical appearance of the thing as lifeless substance permeated with the 'remainder' of the web of signifiers : Titanic wreck , the ideology which it symbolises, its signifiers. What is left, what cannot be represented as concept in the web of signifier is the fascinating 'Thing', for example the fascination with the titanic wreck.


Quote somehow in relation by Baudelaire ( find quote):
The paradox of beauty = both a fleeting moment in time ( the event of some sort) and at the same time an absolute , immaterial, ATEMPORAL concept. The same idea of beauty is actualised into many different artworks.

Reflection 1: Sublime = Echo of what is unrepresentable( here the beautiful, which in itself can be many things eg:tell story of old neighbours). And so Art can be seen as an amplification of that echo. A framing of the sublime. A beautiful transcendent concept that can only arise from the framing of the concept in the artwork.
"Beauty does not exist" : For beauty, like many other concepts, to take many shapes, it must necessarily be an empty form , devoid of all meaning that can serve as the 'pole of articulation' of other concepts which create meaning in relation to this void empty form (almost as an attempt to fill this void ?) . Leads to reflection 2.

TO THINK / THE EXTREME PRODUCTIVITY ARISING FROM THIS 'THING'. Can it be used in art ?


Reflection 2: Beauty as signifier vs/ Beauty as signified : The concept of beauty resides in the signifer relationship of language. For beauty to acquire meaning within a string of signifiers, this field of meaning needs to be articulated through a master-signifier, which itself is left unexplained, and by this very fact ( almost as a transcendent, unquestionable assumption) can explain the rest of the chain signifiers.
Example , what is freedom ? Feminisim ? progress ? it is not enough to articulate those signifiers ( concepts) in relations to themselves, the endless --metonymic -- chain of meanings must be linked to a master signifier : Communism would be a master signifier in relation to which freedom can be articulated as the particular condition arising from re-seizing the means of production. Master-signifier Democracy articulates progress as the inexorable path to global democratisation and so on.

How can this be linked to Art and beauty through this quote ? What in beauty is more than beauty itself ? How is it articulated ?
Art as actualisation of a concept.

Psychoanalysis and Clinical 'Mental' practice:
Charcot taught Freud. Charcot was known for his 'research' into hysteria.
He would display his patients to the public.


Freud didn't.

Lacan started again the process of Case presentations:

1. Essential part in the psychoanalytic cure. The displaying of the patient gives to the his/her sympthom/history a dramaturgical turn. In place of the analyst, the analysand becomes the 'Subject supposed to know' ( explain)
2. This framing of the sympthom reminds me of something : The framing of the artwork, see reflection 1 on TOPIC OF EXPLORATION

Language and the body . Symbolisation, hysterical crisis etc..

Subjectivity arises in Language. The relation of mind and body. Psychosomatic . 'Energy'/ energetics

Every sound, musical gesture arises from the movement of the body. The impulse is body.

Classic Cliché : The trio band (piano, bass andr drums) as three limbs.

But , it is possible to conceive an approach to the body in free improvisation. Thinking of it as ever present musical possibility. The music already exists within the 'flow'- Movement of the body , like a river, and then the performer would need to fill the role of the framer. what of this flow is exteriorised ?

Back to psychoanalysis. Can we conceive, possibly, of an approach to the body and to the Trio as body in a dimension of hysterical crisis. ( Energy that is symbolised in language becomes trasnfered isntead through the body- see 'active' yoga or what) so that the movement of the body is a sort of trance-like , state that would give way to the creativity arising from the rerouting of that dynamism from language to body.

In this sense, the very approach as hysteria, understood in the psychoanaltyic sense, can be already seen as a way of shifting my stance within the system.
The two yellow boxed reflection are also connected: the dramaturgy/theatricality of the movement of the body , as framing of a particular musical action

Duo with Marco Luparia:
Archiving sound, possibly creation of a soundbank. Acoustic recording of 'noise'. Then organisation of those sounds into stand-alone gestures, then organisation of gestures into music. We're at the very start of the process

Anaphora Trio= Exploration of the body ( as described in yellow box down below). Possible involvement of choreaographer/dancer

Trio in italy= expansion to more instruments( strings ?) . We are meeting Sunday to seriously discuss a concept. The expansion to other instruments will allow me and Marco ( he is also part of this trio) to further the archiving of sound we have in part decided to go towards.

It's relevant because they challenge the idea that language is the only way to define meaning and that can be reclaimed. They reject phallogocentrism.
